We are committed.

MAHEC is committed to the health and wellness of our black patients, families, and employees. We acknowledge that issues regarding discrimination is not new, and equity is long overdue.

UNC Health Science at MAHEC’s Department of Continuing Professional Development is conducting a national conference to address health disparities towards black patients.

The Mountain Area Health Education Center presents the Asheville African American Health Symposium.  This Symposium is designed to create awareness and education within the medical community regarding the current health of African Americans and the implications of centuries of medical oppression.  Racial disparities are unremitting and widespread within the African American population. The causes are multifactorial - including historical oppression, implicit bias toward African American patients, community mistrust, and lack of diversity within the healthcare field, to name a few.  This conference will include national leaders in medicine and in the African American community to bring the conversation to Asheville on how to address these disparities.

The 3rd in-person conference will occur October 25-26, 2024 in beautiful Asheville, NC.

Leading up to the conference, MAHEC is hosting a quarterly webinar series of national experts to start the discussion and build momentum around closing the gaps in African American healthcare disparities. This year’s webinar sessions are journal article reviews that highlight racial disparities with discussions lead by national leaders who are committed to the advancement of health for African American patients.

Asheville, North Carolina

Good Morning America listed Asheville, NC as one of the 10 most beautiful places in America to visit.

This charming city captivates your pallet with the local eateries and breweries, illuminates your eyes with amazing views from every angle, and is known for having the largest privately owned house in America.

There is a culture of art and plenty of outdoor activities for the entire family to enjoy.

Asheville has been known to be a diverse city. While the city may be diverse in certain areas, many locals do not believe it is culturally diverse. Particularly within the healthcare industry, racial disparities exist in the workforce and in patient care. There has been a focus on data analysis over decades of years that highlight the disparities and bias towards African American patients in Asheville, North Carolina.
